How to Keep a Birthday Party Under $100

So I might not quite be like the lady who kept her daughter's birthday party under $10 bucks, but I know how to be thrifty when I want to be! There are quite a few variables that go into planning any party - location, age of child, number of guests, etc - so planning a party on my budget may not be as easy for you, but I'm going to show you how I'm planning my daughter's 5th birthday party for under $100. If you have any tips, please leave them in the comments!

Location -- We are planning on having her party at the park. They charge $15 to rent a pavilion, so that only leaves $85 to work with. Sometimes you can have a party at the park for free, or have it in your back yard or even at a relative's or friend's house. Brainstorm to come up with different free venues. Sometimes restaurants that have indoor play areas will not make you reserve and pay for tables for your party, but that also means there may not be tables available when you show up. -- $85 left

Party Supplies & Decor -- There are great sets out there when it comes to buying things for character birthday parties, but don't get sucked in! Sapphire wants a Hello Kitty birthday party, so we are going to get a few HK balloons and the rest will be solid colors to match. The plates, napkins, etc will be solid colors to match as well. This article talks about using origami to fold the napkins. Great idea!

Napkins, table cloths, plates, cups, decorations - Under $15 total at Dollar Tree. -- $70 left

Party Favors -- Depending on the age and gender, tiles, crayons, or even hair accessories (tutorials here, here & here) may be good party favors. A good rule of thumb is to spend no more than $1 per guest on party favors when trying to stay under $100. I'm going to use organza bags that I have on hand, and fill them with hair accessories for the girls and bugs for the boys ($1 for 10 at Wal-Mart for bugs in the party supply section). - $10 total, as we expect 12 guests and I have most of this stuff on hand. -- $60 left

If you search for cheap birthday party ideas, many places will tell you to skip invitations. I disagree with this, because I absolutely love receiving mail - so I figure everyone else does too! You can have the birthday girl create invitations, or you can make them in Word - your expenses will be minimal. Or you could even purchase them at Dollar Tree for $2 and use the rest for postage. Under $10. -- $50 left

Games & Entertainment --  Skip the cheesy $200 magician, or the $100 creepy clown, and go old school. Play Pin the Tail on the Donkey, Musical Chairs, and any other games that are free. -- $50 left

Remember, most kids just want to have fun and eat cake. Read this article on how to simplify your party.

Food & Drinks -- For our party, we are serving hot dogs and chips: think end of August in St. Louis... do you have a better idea?? :) I know this opinion isn't favorable, and almost every "budget birthday" article tells you to bake your own cake, but I do not like them. So we are going to serve cupcakes that we purchase from a bakery. Drinks will be water - I have a ton of bottled water from when it was free - and punch (on hand). $35 total -- $15 left.

The last $15 can be spent on gifts, or on making and filling a pinata!

    WAH Opportunity: Willow House

I would like to introduce you to a new friend of mine! Her name is Halle and she recently joined Willow House. If you're like me, you've never even heard of this company, so I am going to have her share a little bit about herself and her company so we can all get acquainted.

I joined Willow House because I love decorating and wanted a discount on their awesome products. As soon as I became a consultant I realised that this could be a profitable business and help me stay home with my children rather than get a job outside the home. All their products are really high quality and they specialize in entertaining products and housewares. We even have amazing weekly deals.. Click here to see them.

The best thing about this company is the amount of support you reveive, when you log in you even have a ‘chat online for help’ option so you can have someone help you in real time, this is such a big deal when you have a question and need an answer immediately. They also give back in a huge way to domestic abuse charity 'Cut it Out'

If you become a consultant before 30th June (cutting it short, I know!) the sign up fee is only $49. The lowest its ever been, for this price you get a kit worth over $200. Or you can purchase a bigger kit for $199 with over $500 worth of items. One of the great things is you don’t have to buy your own sales materials and brochures. For every order you place, 5% gets turned into business credit that you can use for supplies. You can also earn a $50 fuel bonus if your parties reach a certain (very achievable!) level of income in a month.

If you like decorating and love great products this is an awesome opportunity!

I know if you are like most moms, you want the chance to be able to stay at home with your child(ren). Working from home is a great opportunity! If you think Willow House would be a good fit with your life, please email my friend Halle and she can give you more information.

    New to couponing?

I have been talking to a lot of women on Cafemom lately that want to know how to coupon but don't know where to get started. I always suggest checking these three posts out first, but here is another way to get started. I'm teaching couponing classes in the St. Louis area so if anyone is interested just email me.

    Go to www.grocerysmarts.com.

    Choose your state.

    Choose your store.

Click start, and the white boxes will go gray. Click on the deals that you want to try.

Print your list, and then go through and double check to make sure you have all of those coupons. If you don't, just scratch it out. If you start with a decent pile of coupons from the last few weeks, you should do well with this type of list. If you don't have any coupons, don't get discouraged. Start your coupon binder and in a week or two you will be couponing like a pro.

Repeat this process with each store you visit.

(Look at the image below.) The arrow on the left shows the number of stars this deal has. Grocerysmarts.com puts the best deals in red. However, sometimes they will say it's a GREAT deal when it really could be better. For example, on today's deal it says BAN (deodorant) is $1.49 at Walgreen's. That's true, but if you use your $.70 coupon that came in today's paper, you'd get it for a lot less. So be sure to watch your coupons, your store ads, etc to get the very lowest price.

The arrow in the middle shows the price before coupons, and the arrow on the right shows the price after coupons. The column to the right shows where to get the coupons if they are printable, or where to search in your binder if you have clipped them already (it will say 6/5 SS, for example).

Remember that Extreme Couponing (like the show) is not realistic. You don't need 186 bottles of mustard. Just focus on saving your family the most money. Don't worry about anything else!

    Saving money!

I hope everyone had a great weekend!! I know I sure did. I needed those 3 days to rejuvenate. I caught some awesome sales this week. What about you?

I've been on a couponing high for about two weeks straight now and just wanted to share! :) I am currently teaching couponing classes at my home, and in the very near future, I will be teaching free (basic) couponing classes at local libraries. I never imagined that clipping a few coupons would take me this far, but it has been a fun trip and I'm sure there is more to come.

Degree - $.25! :) Icy Hot & BC free after RR. REACH Floss - $.12 money maker. Banana Boat was under $1 a piece.

Not the healthiest but for a party... $.78 pizzas, $.50 hot dogs.

About $1.50 a box. Buying some more today for $.88 a box!

The slushies were a filler item because I had too many coupons at WG with the BC & Icy Hot. Icy Hot was a $.99 money maker. Bandages were not on sale, don't know why I threw them in there. Aloe was less than $1 a piece.

Got these for $1.10 each! ^^

$1.60 money maker (5 floss). Free hair ties at WG with RR.

These were only $1 instead of $3 with my price matching magic. :)

If you are visiting my page for the first time and are looking for the couponing classes, here they are! These were never really meant to be "classes", I just ramble about stuff a lot and at that time it was coupons. There are many, many wonderful sites that will teach you about couponing. I think the best way to learn is in person. So if you have the chance to take a local couponing class, or even to get a couponing DVD, you will learn so much faster! It is definitely worth the investment.

    Today's Shopping Trip

I went shopping on Monday for once (instead of waiting til the end of the week when all of the deals are sold out). It was not busy at all at the store. Monday might be my new permanent day to go shopping! Got some great deals. :) The Sunday paper coupons were not very good so I haven't clipped them yet. Used price matching and previously clipped coupons for these deals.

I was really disappointed in today's paper. I am, however, really happy that I spent less than $90 on groceries that will last us more than a week. And the Walgreen's deals were great!

For those that haven't visited my blog before, I just want to let you know we don't have a RiteAid, CVS, etc around here so I shop at Wal-Mart and price match with ads from the paper. I don't stockpile because we live in an 800 sq ft apartment, and I don't buy things unless we will use them. The only thing I will eventually stock up on is health and beauty. No food. Until we get a house anyway!

Colgate total gum defense: 2/$6 at Walgreen's. $4 register rewards. $1 coupon off one, $.75 coupon off the other. $.25 total for 2, so $.12.5 cents a piece? lol I know you can sometimes get tooth paste for free but this is the expensive stuff so I "splurged".

    Mitchum was only $1.99 with a Walgreen's coupon(we usually pay almost $4).

The razors were on sale at WG for $9.89. They gave register rewards of $5, plus I had a $4 coupon. Total: $.89!!

Mr. Clean normally almost $4, price matched down to $2. Coupon for $1.50 off 2. Total: $1.25 each.
Febreze normally $3.36, price matched down to $2, coupon for $1. Total: $1.
Schick Quattro razor normally $9, price matched down to $5, coupon for $2 off. Total: $3 (I know some people don't like to pay this much for razors but these are my favorite!)

These were priced $3.36-$4.26 at Wal-Mart. Price matched with K-Mart down to $2. Coupon for $1.50 off 3, so $1.50 each.
Bad picture, sorry! 1lb bag of Rold Gold tiny twists regular, and then mustard flavor. Regularly $3+, price matched with K-Mart to $1.99, coupon for $2 off 2. So $1 each!
How much did you save this week?

The "F" Word (Relax.. Read On!)

    Frugal. Cheapskate. Tightwad.

Frugal living is not just for the poor, or for the cheap. It's for the smart! Vacation time is just around the corner, so I think we should talk about ways to have a frugal vacation while still making it an actual vacay for you!

    Food.

It's expensive enough when you're at the grocery store, but when you're out of town it's even worse. And who wants to eat food out of the cooler for days straight? Can you say soggy cheese? To save money on food, go to the restaurants for lunch but not for dinner. Or better yet, have an early dinner! Most places serve lunch until at least 3 or 4. So if you arrive at 3:50, you still get the lunch price but after you eat your rolls or salad, you're eating at 4:30 (which is closer to dinner time) and still paying only lunch price. Score.

Stay at a hotel that serves breakfast for free. I think that's a given, but just in case you didn't think of it, that is one of the best ways to save money. Nowadays, it doesn't cost any extra to stay at a hotel that serves breakfast versus one that doesn't. Fill up on breakfast, grab a few bagels or yogurts for a snack for later (if you're having a late breakfast and early dinner, you can snack for lunch), and you're all set.

At buffets, kids usually eat free. If you have 3 children with you, and 2 adults, you're paying $10 each for the adults and the kids are free. If you really need to save money, skip the soda and get water (free). That means you paid $20 for 5 people to eat. Cheaper than the $1 menu at McDonald's, and so much better! You can also go at 3:00 (similar to above) and get the lunch price, but take your time so it is actually a lunch/dinner combo!

Share a plate. This can be romantic as well as frugal. :) If you end up at a restaurant that forbids splitting plates, one of you can order a soup (cheap!) or salad and share that as well.

    Avoid.

You want to avoid souvenir shops all together if you are on a budget. Over-priced junk. Ick.

Don't rent a car if you're staying in a city. You can walk or catch a bus for a couple of bucks. Or better yet, see if they have a train to take you places. Fun and inexpensive. :)

Credit cards - I know this sounds crazy, but leave them at home! Bring one just in case of an emergency but do not use it just for the heck of it. When I'm on vacation, I carry a little bit of cash and leave the debit card at the hotel (hidden, of course). I don't want to spend more than I planned on spending, and I can't if I don't have the means to do so.

Avoid going over budget. Set a daily meal and entertainment spending limit and stick with it.

    Airfare.

Obviously if you have more than one person going on vacation, driving may be cheaper, but if you must fly, plan ahead to get the best air fare deals. Now you could wait til the last minute and get great deals, maybe... but that's a maybe. So I wouldn't recommend it.

If you visit matrix.itasoftware.com/cvg/dispatch you will be directed to the same database that travel agents use, but for free. You cannot purchase tickets on this website but you can compare prices so you know what the best price will be.

Taking the late flight is usually best, and if you can fly over night and during the week, that's even better. Air fare prices change up to three times a day, so when you are looking for prices, like I said, plan ahead. Then you can compare prices for a few days and grab them when they're low.

AirFareWatchDog.com is a website that will email you sales and alerts for any airport or trip. Farecast.live.com and farecompare.com search records of fares to give price trends for your trip.

Being flexible will also save you a lot of money. Keep this in mind when planning time off work!

    Other ways to save.

Pack light. If you choose a few outfits that you can mix and match, you are going to be packing less clothes for each family member (easily saving yourself at least one piece of luggage and an extra charge at the airport).

Take photos of your travel documents and send them to yourself via email. If you lose anything, you will have these available at the touch of a button. This could also save you a lot of time and money.

If you are on a romantic getaway and still trying to pinch pennies, grab a matinee and then hit up Happy Hour. See what time the local pubs or restaurants have Happy Hour. Then watch the movie (matinee prices are always cheaper), and stroll over to Happy Hour afterwards. Think dinner & a movie, but reversed.

What are some ways you save money while vacationing?

Or how are you saving money to go on a vacation?

    Couponing for Extreme Beginners

**RIGHT CLICK ON LINKS, CLICK OPEN IN NEW TAB**

I got a few messages asking for more tips/tricks for actual couponing virgins, so I threw together a few ideas and I hope these help. Feel free to email me any time or leave a comment if you have questions. If this info is too basic, check out my couponing series (week 1, 2, 3).

This will all be kind of scattered, as I am thinking of these as I type.

*If something is on sale for 10 for $10, you don't have to buy 10 to get the sale price unless it specifically says so (which is rare). When I first discovered a Schnucks (they do 10/$10 a lot), I thought you had to buy all 10. I ended up buying 10 jell-o's, 10 two-liter sodas, etc etc. My roommates laughed at me when I got back home and was complaining about having to buy 10 to "get such a good deal". Just buy 1 and it's $1. 2 and it's $2. You get the concept. :)

*Find out if your store doubles coupons. If they do, find out the maximum value they will double for. Most stores will only double up to a dollar.

*I don't use abbreviations or acronyms when talking about coupons, but some folks do. This site breaks it down for you.

*Visit your store online and find their coupon policy. Print it out and carry it with you in your coupon binder every time you visit. If you have any problems, or questions, you can easily refer to it because it will be in the back of your binder (use a sheet protector). (Wal-Mart's NEW coupon policy - 4/2011 - is here.)

*Make sure your store takes internet coupons before you go crazy and print 872389473 of them. Many stores do not.

*Ask for rain checks. Many stores will offer rain checks if they are out of the items you are after. If there is a great sale going on, and you have coupons, you want a rain check. Just hope the coupons don't expire before they fulfill the check. :) On the flip side, a rain check allows you some extra time to come up with more coupons to use!

*It is usually a better deal to buy the smaller size. The larger size will be cheaper with a coupon but sometimes the smaller size is free!

*Get coupons! Besides the newspaper, you can check my past posts... or visit these sites to sign up for mailings: Baby coupons, General coupons

*Pictures of other coupon binders and organizers can be found here.

*Sometimes being a suck up pays off. Contact the company and give them positive feedback, and they will send you coupons and/or free stuff. Extensive list of companies and numbers.

*This part isn't quite about couponing but it will save money. Organize your grocery list by the part in the store the items are in. For example, if aisle one has bread and snack cakes, you would write them next to each other on the list.

*And, just for kicks, in case you want to go all 'extreme' couponing on me... your very own dumpster diving tool kit. No, I'm serious. Click it.

I know this is simple stuff for some of us, but I was asked to go back to the verrrrrrry basics. So I hope this helped. Add your tips to the comments!

    Quick: Sweet Deal!

*UPDATE* Try coupon code WELCOME5 -- it should give you $5 off!! I did not see this coupon until after using my $4 off. Let me know if it works! :)

I usually don't post these things but I just scored a pretty sweet deal, so I'm going to share! :)

$6 $5 for a 1 year subscription to Nat Geo for Kids. See below for details on how to save.

It's free to sign up for E-Bates, so do that real quick and then come back to this post. :) Then visit Mamapedia and look for the Nat Geo offer (should be on the right side of the page). Click "BUY" and then in the promo code box, type INTRO4. You will save $4! That makes the subscription to Nat Geo for Kids only $6 for an entire year. On top of that, you will get 4% of that put into your E-Bates account! How cool is that? Considering Nat Geo for Kids is usually $24 for a year, I'd say that is a pretty SWEET DEAL.

Share your sweet deals in the comments!
